Wound Care for PSW's

Program Description

This course is specifically designed for Personal Support Workers (PSWs), recognizing their vital role in wound prevention and care. Wound Care for PSWs equips participants with the practical knowledge and skills needed to identify, manage, and prevent wounds as part of their daily caregiving responsibilities. The program focuses on early recognition of skin integrity issues, enabling PSWs to take proactive steps to address concerns before they escalate.

In addition to care techniques, the course emphasizes effective communication with healthcare teams, ensuring PSWs can collaborate seamlessly within a patient’s care plan. Participants will gain the confidence to support wound care management with precision and professionalism, enhancing outcomes for the individuals they care for. This course empowers PSWs to play an essential role in promoting health and maintaining quality of life for their patients.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 1. Recognize early signs of compromised skin integrity and potential wounds. 2. Apply basic wound care techniques, including proper cleaning and dressing. 3. Understand their role in promoting wound prevention through positioning, nutrition, and hygiene. 4. Communicate effectively with nurses and other healthcare providers regarding wound care concerns. 5. Support patients and families in maintaining skin health and preventing complications.

Duration/Time Commitment

3 hrs/day over 3 days online

Fully Online - Live Instructor Led sessions

In addition to class time, one (1) hour of self study time per course day.This course includes live virtual sessions and self-directed learning components to support skill development in a flexible, engaging format.

Program Outline

1. Introduction to Wound Care for PSWs o Overview of skin anatomy and wound types o Understanding the PSW's role in wound care 2. Wound Prevention Strategies o Techniques to maintain skin integrity o Importance of repositioning, hydration, and nutrition 3. Basic Wound Care Techniques o Cleaning, dressing, and handling wounds safely o Demonstrations of simple dressing applications 4. Communication and Collaboration o Reporting changes to healthcare providers o Working effectively within the care team 5. Hands-On Practice and Scenarios o Role-playing common wound care situations o Reviewing case studies to reinforce learning

Requirements for Enrolment

This course is ideal for:
Personal Support Workers (PSWs) seeking foundational wound care knowledge.
PSWs wanting to enhance their skills and improve patient outcomes.
No prior wound care training is required—this course provides an excellent introduction
tailored to PSWs.

This program is offered in English. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the language requirements. You may be asked to demonstrate language proficiency.
